About

Sound is what happens when air is pushed. Design is what happens when space is manipulated. Designers and musicians are complementary. Each rely on rhythm, melody, form, harmony, texture, and dynamics to communicate ideas and emotions beyond words. Is a book or publication not as tied to time and sequence as a symphony in three movements? Does a duet between voice and piano not contain two distinct colors that, when combined, create an entirely new hue? The parallels between design and music are innumerable, though the fields rarely seem to overlap.

In concert with the City of Chicago’s Year of Chicago Music, the Design Museum of Chicago is planning programming celebrating the connections between music and design. This includes a blind juried exhibition which will highlight a body of work from visual artists, musicians, and designers. The work displayed in the City of Chicago Expo 72 Gallery at 72 E. Randolph will incorporate or be inspired by music (in an abstract way), allow for the performance of music in and of itself (like the design of an instrument), or be used to sell or brand music (like a logo or packaging.) By integrating contemporary and historic work, All Together Now celebrates the integral part music has always played in Chicago’s creative culture.

The museum finished installing an exciting project at The Silver Room in Hyde Park back in the fall of 2020. They collaborated with Rob McKay, Eric Williams, and The Silver Room to create a pop-up installation exploring Chicago's connection to House music. Did you know that House music was born here?

A variation of the typeface design was used as the display type of the pop-up installation on the left side of the photo.
